Leinster Indoor Championships 2023
It was a long two-day competition in Athlone, but ye won't find a harder-working or more determined group of athletes than the Bree AC athletes who took part in the Leinster Indoor Championships 2023. Ava Wilson, Sarah O'Brien, Hazel Breen, Ruth Hassey, Lea Bolger, Cian Fortune, Keira Wilson, and Ciara Laffan pushed themselves to the limit in sprints, hurdles, jumps, and throws, leaving nothing on the track or field. And while the competition was tough, the Bree AC athletes were tougher, delivering some truly impressive performances and making all in Bree AC very proud. Below are the results from the two days in Athlone:
On Day 1, Ava Wilson opened the medal count for Bree with a winning jump of 4.38m in the U13 Girls Long Jump. Ava was in wonderful jumping form with 4 of her 6 attempts over 4.23m. Incidentally, Jennifer Whelan of Kilmore AC was third in the same event. Sarah O'Brien won the U14 Girls High Jump with an impressive 1.50m, just missing the championship record. Ruth Hassey came in 7th place with a jump of 1.25m in the same event. Hazel Breen progressed through the heats and made it to the semifinals of the U14 Girls 60m Sprint. She also threw brilliantly in the Shot Put with a distance of 6.07m. In the Boys U16 1500m, Cian Fortune ran in his first Leinster Indoor Championship and finished a very impressive 7th in a time of 4:56. On Day 2, Ava Wilson won her second gold of the weekend in the High Jump with a great jump of 1.43m, just missing out on the championship record of 1.46m. And to top off a great weekend, Ava went on to win 2nd place in the 60m Hurdles. Sarah O'Brien and Ruth Hassey progressed to the final of the U14 60m Hurdles, both improving on their heat times to finish 5th and 6th respectively. In the U14 Girls Long Jump, the three Bree AC girls made good improvements: Sarah got 3.85m, Ruth jumped 3.61m, and Hazel Breen achieved 3.47m. In the U15 Girls Shot Put, Lea Bolger threw 8.18m to finish in fourth 4th place barely missing out on a medal but later in the day, Lea finished in 2nd place in the U15 Hurdles, battling through a clipped hurdle for a strong finish. U16 Girls, Keira Wilson and Ciara Laffan competed in the 60m hurdles, and both progressed comfortably through the heats into the final. Keira Wilson finished in a well-deserved 4th place, which was impressive given that she was ill during the week. Unfortunately, Ciara Laffan was disqualified for a false start, which was unusual for her. Overall, it was a fantastic two days of competition for the Bree AC athletes at the Leinster Indoor Championships. Congratulationsto all medal winners and participants who gave it their all. Ava, Hazel, Sarah and Ruth will be continuing with hard training this week in preparation for their next competition this weekend, the Girls u14 4x200m relay. Well done to all qualifiers for the All-Ireland Championships in April. Keep up the hard work!

January 2022
Welcome to a new season. Registration is now due. See home page for rates.

We would love some old photos for the archive section and more recent photos to add to feature pages. Send to our email; [email protected]
The past two years have been very bleak, to say the least, due to Covid 19, but we are all looking forward to returning to some kind of normality with the Leinster Indoors due to take place in early Feb 2022. Training at present is not as it used to be either but we have all grown accustomed to booking our training slot, training in 'pods' and social distancing at all times.
Indoor Training was progressing well for January and February 2020 until the whole country went into lockdown for the first time due to Covid 19. On the competition side of things for 2020, 9 athletes had competed in the Leinster Indoors and 7 medals were won by Ciara Laffan 1st 60mH; Jayden Kenny, Abbie Doyle and Katie Doyle 2nd 60mH, Kiera Wilson 3rd 60mH, Abbie Doyle 3rd 60m and Jayden Kenny 3rd LJ. All other competitions were cancelled for the remainder of the year.
2020 was supposed to be a big year for Bree AC as celebrations were planned to mark our 50th year in existence. However, as we all know, nothing much happened outside of lockdowns. During two of the lockdowns, the more senior athletes were involved in and enjoyed some friendly virtual competition between themselves. Some outdoor training took place during the summer 2020 and again in November and December 2020 within 'pods'.
When we emerged from lockdown No 3 in April 2021 , County, Leinster and National T& F did take place during late summer and autumn months with some great performances by Bree AC Athletes, especially Jayden Kenny winning National Gold in Hurdles, newcomer Sarah O'Brien winning National Silver in High Jump and Ciara Laffan won National Silver in hurdles.
Sarah is coached by former Bree AC athlete Catherina Corcoran. Both Jayden and Ciara are coached by former Bree AC athlete William Spratt Murphy. (Full report is available in results pages).

Great day was had in Athlone IT yesterday at Day 1 of the Leinster Indoor Championships with all Bree AC athletes competing to their very best . Well done guys. We are super proud of you all. First on the track was our two U12 athletes, Harry Devereux and Katie Doyle. This was a first for these two but they handled the day like professionals and learned a lot from the experience. Harry had a great run and was unfortunate not to make the semi final while Katie progressed to the semi final and missed out on a place in the final by just 0.02 second.
Abbie Doyle and Gracie Kehoe were next to the track and both girls threw everything they had throughout the three rounds. Gracie finished in sixth place in the final and Abbie Doyle who displayed pure determination to claim the U13 silver medal. Next was Sean Rowley, who ran superbly through the three rounds and despite finishing in fourth place went home very happy having taken 0.25 seconds off his PB in the U14 60m.
Olivia Howe was next on the track and claimed a U19 60m bronze medal with a very determined sprint from start to finish.

Leinster Championships
Under 14 800M was without doubt the race of the day. This is a tough race at the best of times but was made even tougher today by the 26 degrees heat. Conor Doyle had amazing run to earn his first Leinster outdoor medal, fighting hard all the way and picking up a silver medal for his effort. More importantly Conor has come back from a broken knee cap a year ago and has reduced his pb by from 2.28 to 2.17. One to watch for the future. Olivia Howe had a super run in the 200m crossing the line in third place and was very pleased to be awarded the bronze medal. Gracie Kehoe earning her second medal of the championship today with a super run in the hurdles and bringing home a silver medal following her hj success the previous day. Sophie Codd had the race of her life earning her a new pb and a silver medal in the hurdles. All Ireland Qualifiers finishing in fourth place were Sophie Codd in the 250m Hurdles and Grace Donohoe in javelin

July News 2016
At the National Athletic Championships in Tullamore, Sean Rowley finished second in the U12 60m, equalling the Championship Record with a new pb of 8.35 sec. adding to the silver medal he won in the same event at the National Indoor Championships. Aoife Cloke Rochford won gold in the U18 100m Hurdles. In the 200m she finished in second place in the final with a new pb time and only daylight separating her from the winner and in the 100m Aoife equalled her personal best to finish in third place, missing out on the gold by only 0.03 sec. These were fantastic achievements for Aoife who is just back this year having taken a year out due to illness. At the Nationals, over the two weekends Sophie McCabe won four medals. She won silver medals for the Triple Jump, Long Jump and 200m and a bronze medal in the 400m. Sophie has had huge success over the last couple of years. It's great to see hard work paying off.
The Boys U12 relay of Robbie Chapman, Shane Doran, Sean Rowley and Ryan Whelan won bronze.
Maura Doyle and Ciara Laffan took part in the U9 300m and although the standard was very high both finished in the top six of their heats and never have up from start to finish. The girls were back on the track for the relay with Chloe Casey and Sophie Chapman and qualified for the final in second place in their heat. In the final they would not be denied as Ciara Laffan stormed down the finishing straight and crossed the line in third place. Fantastic run for their first All Ireland. Our jumping duo of Johanna Chapman & Katie Doyle have worked hard in the long jump pit preparing for the nationals and both excelled with pb jumps earning them a well deserved bronze medal (combined jump of 7.12m)
Leinster champions Abbie Doyle and Gracie Kehoe took to the track for the U11 60m sprint and despite both finishing second in their heat were denied a medal by a mere 0.06 finishing in fourth place . Unfortunately, the girls had the same fate in the relay with Katie Doyle and Johanna Chapman joined their team.
Shane Doran started the day with high jump and equalled his pb but a place on the podium wasn't for him today as he left the high jump and headed straight to the track for the sprint missing out on a place in the final by just 0.01
Katie Whelan was our only competitor in the Multi Event . This is only her second time ever to compete in this event and she finished in a very credible 6th place. Katie Whelan had a super run in the U14 75m sprint final finishing in fifth place.
At the National junior championships Sophie McCabe won the silver medal in the Triple Jump while her sister Elaine won gold in the U23 3000m Steeplechase in her return to competitive athletics. Elizabeth Egan competed in the Senior Athletics Championships in Santry where she finished in third place.
